First Graphite Portrait Commission of 2016 Completed!

Graphite Portrait Commission
Well, I will undoubtedly go in and fiddle a bit as I am never "done"....but it will be pretty minor.  This portrait was so much fun to do as it was on a tight time line which meant I got to spend to full days in the studio working just on this which is great.

It is sometimes hard to get back into the flow of things when you have been away for too long so it is great to have the back to back sessions.

This commission is roughly 8x10" on Stonehenge paper, I am loving this paper!

First Graphite Portrait Commission of 2016 and a Marathon Day in the Studio

Graphite Pencil on Stonehenge Paper - 8x10"
That is what I call a full day in the studio....drawing is the best.  This is a graphite pencil commission portrait that will be given as a gift to an unsuspecting girl friend of my client.

All the hard work is done and now is the fun part, who am I kidding, it has all been fun, of really getting in an modeling the features and darkening her hair.  I LOVE her hair, I forced myself to wait until most of her face was brought up to reasonable level before I even touched her hair.

So tomorrow will be all about softening, refining to get more of a resemblance and pushing the darker values.  Looking forward to another fun, full day in the studio!

New Acrylic Classes Starting This Week at Port Moody Arts Centre - Landscape Underpainting

Acrylic Landscape - Under Painting
This is an under painting I have been working on for this weeks acrylic classes.  This class will be a combination of abstract lessons and realism lessons which I think it the best of both!

Only a couple of days left to register if you would like to join me.  This class is great for absolute beginners to intermediate artists as there will be many demos, one on one help and we will all work at our own pace.  Should be lots of fun!

If you are interested in joining me for classes register online at Port Moody Arts Center Online Link or call 604-931-2008.

First Painting of 2016 - Jellybean
Equine Horse Portrait - Oil on Wrapped Canvas

Jellybean
Equine Portrait - Oil on Canvas
While I started this many weeks back, I finally completed it last week.  It is done using an indirect painting method in oil which is a great way to paint if you don't mind working over a longer period of time.   The nice thing with indirect painting is that you can really work towards a more refined finish and as the layers are painted thinly, you can usually work every day without ever having to wait for paint to dry as you move around the canvas.

I really love how Jellybean's muzzle turned out, it basically fell off my brush.  She was so much fun to paint! I am really looking forward to painting more horses.  Horses are all that I drew for the first few years when I was young and just learning to draw.  It is a great excuse to also spend more time with horses which I really miss.

The other way I like to paint with oils is using the alla prima method which is just a painting completed in one sitting....although I usually like to come back the next day and fiddle just a bit.  It is great to be able to do both at it provides you with the best of both. The Blue Vase & Apples is a recent alla prima painting I completed.

If you are interested in learning to paint alla prima, join me Monday nights at the Port Moody Arts Centre.   You can register online at Port Moody Arts Center Online Link or call 604-931-2008 to register.
