Alla Prima Oil Painting Class - Student Work - New Class Starting in April 4

This is one of my students from my last Alla Prima Oil Painting class and her lovely landscape painting.  We started this class with an exercise on value control and then we created a couple of landscape paintings using the alla prima method.

This class covers what you need to know regarding supplies, fat over lean, support and how to care for your supplies.  We also focus on color mixing, seeing as an artist, edge control as well as what we need to consider as artists when creating paintings.

If you would like to join me for my next class, please register by March 30 which is 5 days prior to the start date of April 4.  You can register at http://register.asapconnected.com/StaffDetails.aspx?pk=24306   or by calling Port Moody Arts Centre directly at 604-931-2008

This is the start of a new project that we will be working on for my upcoming Adventures in Acrylic classes starting on March 10, Thur night from 7-9pm.

A blank white canvas can be an intimidating place to start but once you add a bit of texture...the possibilities start to reveal themselves.

Now to decide on my color palette....this is going to be fun!

If you would like to join me there are only a few spots left so sign up now at http://register.asapconnected.com/ClassDetail.aspx?pk=500451 or if you prefer, you can call 604-931-2008 to register over the phone.

Adventures in Acrylic - Last Class Before Summer Break Starting March 10 at Port Moody Arts Centre

Student's Finishing Touches on Abstract Painting
This is a photo of one of the beautiful paintings done by one of my student's at my last Adventures in Acrylic class at Port Moody Arts Centre.

For my acrylic classes, I use only professional grade supplies (Golden, Liquitex etc.) and teach students the techniques they will need to confidently create their own paintings both during the classes and once they get home and are on their own.

I cover color theory in every class so that, by repetition and example, by the end of the classes students can feel confident about which color to choose for the effect they are trying to achieve.

During the classes we will create anywhere from 2-6 paintings depending on the complexity of the projects as I vary the projects for each session.  My goal is to help artists learn how to see and think as an artist and provide the tools they need so that they can create a process that works for them and their style so that they can consistently grow as an artist.

The  class runs on Thursday night from 7-9pm starting March 10 and you can register athttp://register.asapconnected.com/ClassDetail.aspx?pk=500451 or if you prefer, you can call 604-931-2008 to register over the phone.

Port Moody Arts Centre Open House Tomorrow from 11-2pm - Oil Demo

Oil on Canvas - Work in Progress
All packed up and ready for the open house at Port Moody Arts Centre tomorrow from 11-2pm.  I decided to work on an oil piece tomorrow but I could not decide which painting to work on, landscape or seascape.

So I will bring both and either way it comes down to finishing...well hopefully finishing one of the paintings that I started several weeks...er maybe months ago.  I seem to have a bad habit lately of starting paintings and getting them nearly finished and then I get busy with other projects and forget about them.

If I work on this piece, I will work on pretty much everything but the focal point, the tree.  Well, knowing me I will tinker with that as well ;)  The seascape actually has more work to be done than this one There is just way too much green going on, need to break things up a bit and create more of a sense of depth.  The sea and sky while being a touch too light, are not nearly as light as in the photo, just my lack of photography skill I think :)

First Graphite Portrait Commission of 2016 Completed!

Graphite Portrait Commission
Well, I will undoubtedly go in and fiddle a bit as I am never "done"....but it will be pretty minor.  This portrait was so much fun to do as it was on a tight time line which meant I got to spend to full days in the studio working just on this which is great.

It is sometimes hard to get back into the flow of things when you have been away for too long so it is great to have the back to back sessions.

This commission is roughly 8x10" on Stonehenge paper, I am loving this paper!

First Graphite Portrait Commission of 2016 and a Marathon Day in the Studio

Graphite Pencil on Stonehenge Paper - 8x10"
That is what I call a full day in the studio....drawing is the best.  This is a graphite pencil commission portrait that will be given as a gift to an unsuspecting girl friend of my client.

All the hard work is done and now is the fun part, who am I kidding, it has all been fun, of really getting in an modeling the features and darkening her hair.  I LOVE her hair, I forced myself to wait until most of her face was brought up to reasonable level before I even touched her hair.

So tomorrow will be all about softening, refining to get more of a resemblance and pushing the darker values.  Looking forward to another fun, full day in the studio!

First Painting of 2016 - Jellybean
Equine Horse Portrait - Oil on Wrapped Canvas

Jellybean
Equine Portrait - Oil on Canvas
While I started this many weeks back, I finally completed it last week.  It is done using an indirect painting method in oil which is a great way to paint if you don't mind working over a longer period of time.   The nice thing with indirect painting is that you can really work towards a more refined finish and as the layers are painted thinly, you can usually work every day without ever having to wait for paint to dry as you move around the canvas.

I really love how Jellybean's muzzle turned out, it basically fell off my brush.  She was so much fun to paint! I am really looking forward to painting more horses.  Horses are all that I drew for the first few years when I was young and just learning to draw.  It is a great excuse to also spend more time with horses which I really miss.

The other way I like to paint with oils is using the alla prima method which is just a painting completed in one sitting....although I usually like to come back the next day and fiddle just a bit.  It is great to be able to do both at it provides you with the best of both. The Blue Vase & Apples is a recent alla prima painting I completed.

If you are interested in learning to paint alla prima, join me Monday nights at the Port Moody Arts Centre.   You can register online at Port Moody Arts Center Online Link or call 604-931-2008 to register.
