Monochromatic Spheres....One is Never Enough

Monochromatic Sphere in Oil on Mylar
Monochromatic Sphere in Oil on Panel
Every time I paint or draw a sphere I learn something new.  I found these today while cleaning up my studio & getting ready for my Beginner Oil Painting classes that start on Monday.  There are still a few spots left,  for more information and to register visit http://register.asapconnected.com/EventDetail.aspx?pk=343460

The first sphere was painted on Mylar and looks very soft and blurry which is what I was trying to achieve.  Obviously I need a lot more work on drawing and painting straight lines, you would think that would be the easy part!  This was painted in one pass and could use a second pass to push the darker values more and have a better defined terminator.  Now that I found it I may have to do a second pass.

The second sphere was done on panel and I can't recall if it was done in one pass or two.  Again it could be pushed further so I will likely do another pass on both when I find the time.

It is funny, while working on these I do recall thinking they were horrible and I had planned on throwing them out but now that I see them I think, heck, not bad.  Distance is good :)

To Stretch...Or Not To Stretch....Classes Start Monday

Stretched Arches Watercolor Paper
Nope I am not talking about yoga but watercolor paper.  For me, it is most definitely stretched!  I love the surface of Arches once it is stretched, smooth as a drum and it accepts the paint so nicely.

I am getting ready for my classes that start on Monday, half way done with stretching and thought I would take a break and show my setup. Still a couple of spots left in both my watercolor and oil classes. For more information and to register visit http://register.asapconnected.com/CourseDetail.aspx?CourseId=50001  or http://register.asapconnected.com/EventDetail.aspx?pk=343460

Once I have the paper soaked and stapled to the boards I lie them flat to dry.  I purchased some Ikea Besta bookcases and placed them on their side which replaced my file storage system I made years back.  So much nicer to look at and makes a great window seat.
Arches Watercolor Paper to be Stretched
The image on the left is my stretching table.  I bought two trays from IKEA so that I could have one piece of paper soaking while I stapled the soaked paper.  I used to have one tray and it took about 30 min give or take to stretch 10 sheets of paper, that includes cutting and measuring.  I am horrible at drawing straight lines so I am sure that takes a big chunk of my time and most people could get it done in less ;)

With two trays, I got 8 sheets done in three Snow Patrol songs, so I am guessing 15 min max! Now onto the second batch of stretching.
