Suite E Life Drawing Exhibit - January 8 - February 6, 2016 Opening reception: Friday, January 8 at 7:00pm at Place des Arts

Caitlyn - Life Drawing Sketch
Sorting out what to display at  the upcoming Suite E Life Drawing Group exhibit at Place des Arts and came across this little sketch of Caitlyn.

The group will be exhibiting paintings and drawings but we will also be showing a few sketches from our life drawing sessions.  Luckily I kept a few as often they end up in the trash quickly after the sessions.  This sketch is roughly 11x14" and may be on display at the show.....still sorting through images.

Looking forward to the Opening Reception on Friday Jan 8 from 7-9pm at Place des Arts.  Hope to see you there!

Equine Oil Portrait Work in Progress - Jellybean

Oil on Canvas - Horse Portrait Work in Progress
This is a painting of a sweet horse named Jellybean that I have been working on.  It is still very rough and have only done one pass on the body and a second pass on the head, so a long way to go yet!

I love the markings on this horse and plan to do a few more paintings and sketches of her as she is just so unique.  The first layer of the background has also been applied in a neutral mid-gray value and the next layer of the background will be painted in color so that I further refine the color of her hair.

If you are interested in painting in oil with me, I have a class starting this Monday at the Port Moody Arts Centre, from 12:30-2:30pm and there are still a few spots left.  Please visit http://register.asapconnected.com/ClassDetail.aspx?pk=436228 to register online or call 604-931-2008.

Student Work from Acrylic Abstraction Class - New Classes Starting on Thurs, Nov 12

Student's Work - Acrylic Work in Progress
This is a piece one of my students is working on during our Acrylic for the Absolute Beginner classes at Port Moody Arts Center.

This is only the second layer but it is looking so cool already I wanted to share it!  By limiting the colors and using transparent pigments she will be able to build up her layers to create luminous depth without the worry of things getting muddy.  Looking forward to seeing the finished piece!

If you are interested in this workshop, you can register directly online  or call 604-931-2008.

Student's Work from Drawing Classes

Drawing from Life - Seashell Block In
I am so impressed with all of my student's hard work so far! This student is working on her block in of the small seashell on the top of the still life stand.  This is her second drawing  that she has created at the studio and I am really so impressed with how much progress she had made already on her blocking in the subject accurately.

Blocking in takes patience and the ability to really analyze what you are seeing, not what you think you are seeing.

This is her block in completed and all ready for the next steps, the shading and turning the form.  So excited to see this progress to the next level!
Drawing from Life - Completed Block In of Seashell
If you are interested in take a drawing class with me or a painting class at Port Moody Arts Center, please check out my list of upcoming classes starting the first week of November.

Acrylic for the Absolute Beginner - Class Paintings

Acrylic Projects
My students and I had so much fun making these little paintings that we wanted to share them!  I love how we all used the same colors and technique yet ended up with such a huge variety in styles and colors.

Very cool pieces and two proud students below :)  The next class starts Tues Nov 3 during the day and I have an evening class starting Thur Nov 12 if you would like to join me!  Please visit http://register.asapconnected.com/StaffDetails.aspx?pk=24306 to register or call the Port Moody Arts Center at (604) 931-2008 for more information.

Private Drawing Classes (only 1 spot left for this Wednesday!) and Studio Party

Well I had hoped to do a post about my Studio Party and then a post about private lessons separately but things are just moving too quickly to wait!

I am very excited to say that I will be offering private lessons! Spots have filled up so quickly that I only have one spot left which is tonight Wednesday Sep 23. Please contact me asap if you are interested as it is on a first come basis.

Over the summer months I decided to re-floor and paint my studio and clear out a lot (major understatement) of clutter that had accumulated over the years.  I am so excited about my studio renos that I forgot to take photos of the party all set up with the nibblies table but my hubby manage to get a few photos to share. I was worried things would be too crowded but even with 8 adults in the studio, there was still room for a kid or two to sneak in and raid the dessert tray unnoticed.

Today I took a few more photos to try to show the full studio. The first image below is the left hand side of the studio with very tall cabinets so that I can have still life set ups on the top shelf and still have plenty of storage underneath.  I LOVE how these bookcases fit 16x20" canvases and panels perfectly so they do not stick out at all.  I tend to bump into things.... a lot ;)  I have lights that clamp on the side of the bookcases so I can adjust the lighting for each set up easily to have full control over the form lighting.

The white cupboard contains all, well...most, of my still life collection, my most used brushes ( I still a ton of brushes in the closet on the other side of the room, ugh) and some sketches and studies on the top.  The fireplace is pulled out a few feet from the wall to allow for storage of drawing boards and holds my monitor on top for when I want to work from the computer screen rather than life or a photo. The wall across from the window (not in photo) has a large floor to ceiling closet that hides all my clutter..in an kind of organized way and has bifold doors so I can just close them and not see the odds & ends.

This image below is the right side of my studio and has my home made day bed that I have wanted for years!  The cushion on top is made from 2" think memory foam and is SO comfy. My hubby helped me make the cushion, no sewing thank goodness, and the pillow is temporary until I find the right pillows....I am thinking turquoise or red but I am still on the hunt.

I have more bookcases for still life set ups either on top or on the top shelf and tons of storage on the other shelves.  I really like having my casts hunging up on the wall and I get great natural light from the window which is super motivating to do quick sketches of the casts in between longer drawings and paintings. On the far side of the wall (behind the white door) I have a little closet that holds all my framed artwork so they are all out of the way.

Thank you so much to everyone for taking time out of your busy Sunday to join me for my little Opening Party!   I really enjoyed every one's company and it was so nice to have visitors in my studio as it is usually just me and the cat...for hours on end.  Last but not least....studio gifts :)  Artists always bring the best gifts, wine, chocolate, tea and a tube of oil paint that did not last long enough for the photo and is back in the studio waiting to be used ;)

This was Darya's first first try with oils, not to mention realism, I think she did an amazing job!

Non-Toxic Oil Painting Classes at Port Moody Arts Centre - Classes Start September 14, 2015

Painting in oils can be non-toxic and non-intimidating even for the absolute beginner.

We will start with simple exercises to learn basic oil painting techniques, learning about indirect (painting in layers) painting and then move on to a simple direct (painting in one layer) painting.

This class is perfect for beginners.  All supplies are includes.

The painting above is an alla prima (in one sitting) painting that I painted during the summer from life.  While the drawing skills greatly affect the end result, the concepts are the same so for beginning painters as they are for advanced.  We will start with very simple subjects of the student's choice.  Each student will work on a piece or two through out the course.

If you are interested in joining the class please register at and please register early as the Arts Centre as classes are cancelled a week prior to the start date if the minimum number of students have not been reached.

Drawing From Life - Student Drawing Critique

Student Drawing - Graphite on Paper
This is a beautiful drawing one of my students completed and was brave enough to bring to class for a critique.  We used onions as part of our still life set ups during the class.  She followed the process we used in class and drew the onions from life and did an amazing job!

We did the critique during class but a few areas that the drawing could be improved are listed below:
  •  increasing the value range to create more depth on the onions paying close attention to how the light is hitting the object (we went over light logic in depth during class)
  • the cast shadow on the table especially where the onions meet the table need to be darker and help to ground the onions on the table
  • shading across forms to help objects feel like they are occupying the same space (and are just super fun to draw)
  • the center of the onion should not have such a strong value contrast, this area needs to be darkened as it is not receiving direct light
  • avoid solid lines such as in the stem on the smaller onion, they flatten the object and draw the viewers eye
I look forward to seeing more of her drawings and paintings, they are a treat for the eyes :)  If you are interested in attending a drawing class with me, please visit http://www.stateofartportraits.com/art-workshops-lessons.htm for dates & times.

Quick Little Project for My Absolute Beginners Acrylic Class

Acrylic on Bristol Board
This was SO much fun to do! I have not had the time to play with acrylics over the past couple of years and did not realize how much I missed them.  Since I am now teaching acrylic classes at Port Moody Arts Center, I have a much needed excuse to get back to acrylics and play.

I am pleasantly surprised how much texture and depth could be achieved with only three layers and so simply.  Of course, if left to my own devices, I would add several more layers and still might...must step....away....from....studio.....must....

But for the class tonight, this is where the project will end off..  I just did a easy flower drawing to keep things simple but the possibilities are endless with what one could create using these techniques.

I am so looking forward to playing more tonight!

Some of My Favourite Acrylic Supplies

Well you knew this post was coming ;) Again, I only use high quality professional materials as in the long run, you save money by buying higher quality products as you use less of them.  It is also so frustrating using student quality as they just do not perform well and are much less luminous.

If you are interested in taking one of my acrylic classes, please register in the at online registration or call (604) 931-2008 for more information.  This will be my last acrylic class before summer and registrations ends in the next day or so.

Paints

I love Golden's Fluid Acrylics as the pigment load is very high so a little goes a long, long, long way.  As with all mediums, I like to use a more limited palette and mix the colors that I want.  For a  very versatile color mixing palette, I use the colors below as my basic color mixing palette as I can create a huge range of colors from just the three primaries.

Basic Color Mixing Palette - Golden Fluid Acrylics
  • Phthalo Blue (Green Shade)
  • Quinacridone Magenta (can mix a fuller range of purples) or Quinacridone Red
  • Hansa Yellow Medium
  • Titanium white
Some of my Favourite Colors - Golden Fluid Acrylics
  • Turquois (Phthalo)
  • Quinacridone / Nickel Azo Gold
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Iridescent Colors
  • Interference Colors
Brushes

I don't use brushes much when I use acrylics as I prefer to use spatulas, old credit cards, etc. but when I need to use a brush any old bristle brush or soft synthetic brush will do depending on the thickness of the paint.

Substrates (surfaces to work on)

I prefer just plain old MDF coated with Gesso but I also like regular cotton canvas, watercolor paper, yupo paper and bristol board.

Grounds

For surface preparation I love Liquitex Gesso. It is more fluid than other gessos I have tried and has great coverage so you need less coats.

Molding paste is great for adding texture at the beginning of a painting as well.  It is an absorbent surface so you can do cool liquid techniques as well as more traditional acrylic techniques.

Mediums

So it seems I like shiny things more than I realized.  So I prefer polymer gloss mediums and gels (mainly soft gel but also like the heavy gel gloss as well) for most of my painting.  I do use the matte medium at times when I want to veil and areas or add a bit of texture for the paint to adhere to.

Oil Study - Mouth of David
Beginner Oil Classes Starting March 23, 2015 at Port Moody Art Centre

Mouth of David Cast Oil Study
This is a little study I did when I first started painting in oil.  It is a closed graiselle, which is a painting completed in black and white only.

I did not have the actual cast at the time so I had to work from a photo.  Since then I purchased the cast and have drawn it but I think it is time to try my hand at the cast from life.

After transferring the outline sketch to my canvas I mixed a string of gray scale values using Raw Umber, Ivory Black and varying amounts of Titanium white to get a range of 7 values.  My value 1 is straight titanium white and my value 7 is a 2:1 mix of Ivory Black and Raw Umber.  I really enjoyed this exercise and using a simple subject really allowed me to focus on modelling the form without getting caught up in the details.

The next beginner class starts March 23, please visit http://www.stateofartportraits.com/art-workshops-lessons.htm for more info and register early as spots are limited and classes are cancelled if  the minimum registration is not filled.

Watercolor for the Absolute Beginner Class...Only 1 Spot Left!

Watercolor Magnolia - Work in Progress
For the final project in my last Watercolor Painting for the Absolute Beginner we painted similar flowers and I enjoyed painting them so much, I thought I would paint more flowers just for fun.

This is a little painting I have been working on.  I LOVE magnolias and they are blooming everywhere I look right now!

There are still a few more layers to go but things are starting to take shape and I am really liking the color, so unlike me to paint such chromatic paintings ;)

My next Watercolor Painting for the Absolute Beginner starts March 23, 2015, only one spot left!

Please visit http://register.asapconnected.com/EventDetail.aspx?pk=343497 to register or call (604) 931-2008 for more information.
