Valentine's Day Gift - Graphite Horse Portrait - WIP2

I got so carried away with this drawing that I forgot to do an update sooner! He is so big that I kept thinking just one more thing... ;)

I have worked mostly with 2B graphite for his coat and also with F and HB for the details that I did not want to smudge too much.

I want him to have that velvety feel that horses have that you just can't help but touch them (yes I am a horse freak). The darks are many layers of 2B built up slowly and blended.

The eye has been done mostly with HB up to this point and 2B for the blended areas and pupil. The pupil will be less perfectly round later so it looks a little cartoonish right now! Still lots of work to be done everywhere :)

Valentine's Day Gift - Graphite Horse Portrait

This is a portrait of a horse that I have just started as a Valentine's Day Gift. It has been awhile since I have done a portrait of an animal as have been doing so many people lately...I may have to relearn a few things! I transfered the original sketch to the paper and then darkened all of the lines with an F grade pencil. I then started to block in the dark areas around the eye with a 2B pencil. My scanner is not large enough to capture the body as this one is 11x14.

Kenny and Amy Completed

I made a few more minor edits this morning and darkened Kenny's hat and shirt. I think I have managed to capture them :) I hope she enjoys it, I think it will make for a very unique portrait for her. It really captures the momement of intimacy that they were enjoying!

Kenny and Amy

Well the portrait is complete for the most part. I need to add a few more layers of graphite and blend for his shirt to get a nice even black. I can't see the shirt in the reference photo very well so will either leave as completely black or may add a few creases to add depth, will see how it looks black first ;)

I may need to add a bit more depth to his ear as well as it seems to stand out a touch. Any addition changes will be minor, will see if anything jumps out at me in the morning with fresh eyes!

Kenny - WIP 3

Well Kenny is pretty much completed. I will finish off the background and then add the final touches to Amy's portrait. Her eye area and hair need to be completed and a few adjustments need to be added to her lips and cheek.

Kenny - WIP 2

Several more layers of graphite have been added and blended and I have defined his features to near completion. Just a few more tweaks required and he will be done. Then it is onto the background and finally to add the finishing touches to Amy's portrait.

Kenny - WIP 1

I am working pretty much the same way as I did with Amy, laying in the features and building up the skin tones using 2B and HB graphite. Many more layers to go!

Kenny Sketch

This is the sketch of Kenny. Again, I altered it in photoshop so it could be seen on the screen as it is actually very lightly drawn.

Amy - WIP 3

I have added several layers of H, B, 2B graphite for Amy's hair, blending and removing highlights between each layer. I will add one more layer and then lift out the highlights but will leave this until the end.

I added layers of 2B for her shirt blending in between and added one layer of 2B for the sheet. I still have more work to do on her shirt to add a bit more depth and texture.

I will leave her face for now as I want to add the rest of her features near the end to keep them crisp and prevent smuding. I will define her lips eyes and smile line and lift out highlights. This will add more depth to her face and soften her expression. The eyelashes will be added in full at the very end to keep them as crisp looking as possible.

Sunday, December 17, 2006

Amy - WIP 2

I have added several more layers of graphite, blending and redefining features as I go. I work on the entire face at once so nothing is complete until the end. I need to refine all of her features and the shadows and highlights on her face and neck but she is starting to take shape!

Saturday, December 16, 2006

Amy - WIP 1

I have added several layers of graphite to start shaping
Amy's face and have set in the main features. I will
continue to tweak them as I go and build up the depth of
her features.

The dark area looks a little odd right now
but they will fit in later. The paper seems to take time to
absorb the graphite so it has to be added in layers. I
used 6B, 4B and 2B for the darkest area and 2B for the

Sketch of Amy

I darkened the photo of the sketch in photoshop as the lines are so light they are hard to see. I just did a basic sketch of Amy to serve as guidelines for her main features and darks and lights.

Kenny and Amy Commission

I love this photo, I think it is going to make a really cool portrait!

Christmas Portrait Commission Completed

Leaving the portrait sit overnight is always a good idea, fresh eyes make a world of difference!

I have made a few minor adjustments and lifted the final highlights and the portraits are complete!

I think I have managed to capture their personalities and I hope they will both enjoy the portrait as much as I enjoyed creating it for them!

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP10

Well I think this is it! I added more depth to both of their cheeks and touched up both of their eyes, lips and noses slightly. Finally I added several more layers to both of their hair, so basically I touched up everything ;)

I will leave it overnight to see if anything else needs tweaking. And I will also decide whether to add her nose ring. I would like to but I can't see it in the reference material that I have very well so I am hesitant as it may just detract from the portrait. Will see in the morning :)

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP9

After roughly 4 more hours his portrait is nearing completion. Several more layers need to be added for the hair and beard the hairline adjusted slightly. The right cheek needs a bit of adjustment and then the eyebrows darkened last and I think he will be complete. Then to do the finishing touches on her portrait and see how they look together :)

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP8

Several layers have been added for the hair and I have removed the first layer of highlights. I will add several more layers, removing less and less hightlights as I go.

The left eye is a little too closed so will have to adjust that as well as the shadows under and above both eyes. The nose needs to be brought in more near the eyes which will fix the angle as it is currently off. I have added and removed several layers of graphite for the smile lines but they still need a bit of tweaking. Then it is on to the mouth and chin. The line between the lips needs to be reinforced as do the shadow areas.

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP7

I have added more layers, many more still need to be added and removed. The lips and some more features have been set in but still need to be refined. I have started the hair just to get an idea of the tones and placement of the hairline, still looks a little too high.

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP6

Adding more layers of skin tone and defining the features a bit more. Looks a little funny right now as the lights are darks need to be refined alot so the resemblence is pretty far off right now. Many more layers to add :)

Christmas Portrait Commission - Reference Photo

I thought I should upload the reference photo I am working from as well. It is a pretty low resolution photo but is such a great photo of them both, it really captures their personalities well I think :)

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP5

I have laid down the eyes and started putting down layers of skin tone. Looks a little odd at this stage as I seem to be skipping all over the place for this portrait :) I will continue to keep building up layers throughout, tweaking as I go.

Tuesday, December 05, 2006

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP4

She is near complete! I have a few more minor adjustments to make. The tonal values are a little off in the photo, make photography skills are still very poor :( I need to tweak her lips & eyes a bit more and her hair will be done at the end. I want to wait until Sylvain is near completion and then I will go back and do the finishing touches!

Monday, December 04, 2006

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP3

I have addd more layers of graphite everywhere and will continue tweaking as I go. Her nose is still a little too thin and her eyes need more mischief ;) Lots more to go :)

Friday, December 01, 2006

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP2

I have started laying in the skin tones and features. I use several layers of graphite, the same grades mentioned previously, for the skin tones and blend. I find it best to add in layers as the paper seems to 'take' the graphite better this way rather than if you just add a heavy layer all at once.

I have set in the eyes and nose and will continue to define them as I go. I tend to work all over the place rather than on one specific area at a time so no area is ever complete until the end. I see areas that need to be adjusted and adjust as I go. I find this works best as because I add the tonal values as I go, often the areas that need to be adjusted are more obvious after a few more layers have been added and it give the graphite time to settle into the paper.

Thursday, November 30, 2006

Christmas Portrait Commission - WIP1

I have added the main darks and lights for her hair using several layers of 3H, HB, B, 2B and 4B graphite. This will establish the tonal values enough for now so that I can move onto her face.

Once the portraits are near completion I will tweak the values more adding more darks and mid-tones and as a last step will 'pull out' the highlights.

Christmas Portrait Commission

This is the beginning sketch of one of the Christmas portraits that I am working on. It will be a gift for an unsuspecting girlfriend ;)

The sketch is lighter in reality but I made it darker so it can be seen online. I transfered the sketch to the watercolor paper to avoid damaging the paper's surface.

I do not usually do this much detail at the sketch stage but as I have been doing more paintings lately I thought I would approach this portrait the same way and see how it goes :)

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #7

Well this is the finished portrait! The lighting is still a little poor but what can you do when you live in a rainy city and you lack photography skills?

I added more darks to Scott and refined his features a bit more and then lifted out the highlights. Now to clean it up and off to the post office!

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #7

Finishing touches are complete on Michele... now onto Scott!

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #6

Baby Scott and baby Michele are near complete but will still refine the features a bit more for both and soften some of the skin tones. More darks have been added to Michele but still more to go for both her and Scott. Michele's eyes also need to be darkened as she has deep brown eyes. Some of the features still need to be refined and then highlights will be pulled out for the final step. The photo is quite poor as still raining here...where is the sun!?!?

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #5

This is a scan of the portraits so far. The weather has been so rainy that the photos I have been taking are just too blurry so thought I would try scanning instead :)

I still need to add some more depth to Scott and Michele and need to work on the facial features of baby Scott a bit more.

Michele's chin needs more shading as stands out too much right now and her eyes need more depth. Then I will darken her hair and eyes. Scott (adult) needs more darks added pretty much throughout his face but I will wait until baby Michele is near complete to better judge all of the tones. Baby Scott's eyes need to be opened up more and he needs a bit of softness and tweaking. Getting there... ;)

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #5

I have added more layers of graphite to provide more depth and have lifted off some of the highlights. Did a few more layers of hair and added shape to the hat. Still more tweaking needed but getting closer!

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #4

I have added several layers of graphite for Michele's skin and placed the eyes, nose and mouth. Several areas are slightly off at this point as I tend to work all over and do not finish one area to completion but concentrate on getting the overal tonal values completed and then mold the features more carefully. The base of the hair has been added but will continue to build up once the face is near completion.

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #3

I have started on Michele's portrait now, just adding layers of 2B, B and HB graphite and blending. Looks very odd without the mouth and eyes at this stage. I still have more layers of graphite to add for the skin and to mold the features more. I have just added the base layer of hair with B and 2B graphite so that I can better judge the skin tones.

Monday, October 30, 2006

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #2

I have added some more darks and some highlights throughout. I have reworked the mouth a little but I am still not happy with it but I will move on and come back to it later with fresh eyes. I may add more darks/highlights once the other portraits are complete and tweak a bit more.

Sunday, October 29, 2006

Anniversary Graphite Portrait - WIP #1

The hubby's portrait is 85% complete. I have added several layers of 2B, B, HB and H graphite, blending in between. The mouth needs some work as he is looking much to feminine right now which I am sure he would not appreciate ;) The nose needs a bit of tweaking as well and more darks need to be added throughout. Then to finish up will add the lashes, brows and goatee and finish off the shirt.

Anniversary Graphite Portrait

I have combined the images from separate photos as shown.

This is the basic sketch composite that I have drawn for my latest commission.

It is going to be an anniversary gift for my client's husband. The babies are the couple when they were a little younger ;) The drawing is rougly 11x14 on Arches Watercolor paper. The graphite is a little hard to see in the photo as I have drawn lightly so as to not to disturb the paper. The next update will be clearer!

Acrylic Dog Portrait

Wow, I did not realize how long it had been since I have posted something, I blame all the nice weather! This is a portrait I completed recently of a puppy. I used acrylic on canvas board and he measures about 8 x 10. He was alot of fun to paint, all that fur!

Change in perspective

This is an original piece I just finished. I started drawing it awhile back but got busy with comissions and put it aside till now. May need a few more tweaks...will see. I love the composition. She is looking into the drain thingy in the tub and trying to figure out, now how come that baby is there?!?!?

Sisters Portraits Completed

Well I ended up making minor adjustments to both girls. I darkened both girls hair and touched up the baby sister's eyes a little. I am happy with them both now so will send them off to their mommy :)
Baby PortraitBaby Sister Portrait

Baby Sister Portrait - Final

Well looks like she is completed! I have added several more layers of graphite for her hair, eyelashes and touched up a few areas. I will hang on to it for a day or so in case she needs any touch ups.

Thursday, August 17, 2006

Baby Sister Portrait - update #4

This cutie is starting to really take shape :) I have added more layers for her skin and have much more detail to the mouth and nose. The hair has several layers of 4B, 2B, B, HB and F but still needs more work. Then it is on to the clothes, hair tie and final adjustments!

Wednesday, August 16, 2006

Baby Sister Portrait - update #3

Baby Sister Portrait - update #2

I have added a few layers of graphite again to establish some of the darks and lights. The eyes are about 80% completed. I decided to darken the hair area as her hair is quite dark just to get an idea of the balance for her skin. Still needs alot of evening out but starting to take shape.

Baby Sister Portrait - update #1

This is the start of my next commission. She is the sister of the last portrait. Looks a little scary right now with all the lines! Again using Arches paper and mostly 2B, B, HB and H graphite.

Monday, August 14, 2006

Baby Portrait Completed

I think she is done! I have added and removed graphite in several areas to even out her skin tone and to add more depth. The final wisps of hair have been added. I believe she has more hair on the left hand side but can not really make it out in the reference photo so will leave it for now. The dress is left slightly muted so that it does not compete for attention. I think I have captured what a happy little girl she is!

Tuesday, August 08, 2006

Baby Portrait - update #5

The hair is almost completed. I created the hair using a 2B graphite pencil, blending and then removing areas. I repeat the process several times to add depth and dimension. The hairs on her face will be added at the end as I want them to remain crisp as they are very fine.

I have again added more layers of skin tone in areas. The nose still needs more moulding as it is too light right now and stands out in the portrait. The mouth also requires some moulding still. Several areas need to be touched up but her face is nearing completion!

Sunday, August 06, 2006

Baby Portrait - update #4

Added several more layers of skin tone. It is best to apply the graphite in thin layers as it creates the illusion of depth more smoothly and realistically. Still using mostly 2B, B and H graphite. For blending, I have been using blending stumps and a chamois.
